effect
I thought it odd that a regular customer who tips EVERY week didn’t leave a tip out on Sunday. Minor annoyance since I had been counting on that $2-3 for a redbull later in the day, but he is elderly and ALWAYS tips so I didn’t dwell on it - I figured he must have forgotten or something had come up.
This morning (monday) there was a larger than normal tip ($5) and a note saying “Please don’t LEAVE any more papers. I am going to the hospital and my future is uncertain. I will let you know when to start delivering again.”

morning
Yesterday and today I’ve been filling in for a co-worker at the paper who is on vacation for a few days so I have been out of the house earlier (2:30AM instead of 3:30AM).
I like the early morning a lot. I like the dark turning to light, I like the crisper night air, I like the dew in the grass, the moon shining through clouds (though a clear sky is still my fave), I like the quiet, the empty roads, the abject lack of people. Perhaps there is a reason I have always been fond of end of the world, post-apocolyptic sole survivor stories/movies? I am not as fond of day itself, it usually just kind of sits there squatting, waiting for evening. Or maybe that’s just me projecting as I sit in front of a computer monitor all day waiting for night, for freedom. But I like the night. Dusk and the turning to dark are not as good as Dawn and the turn to light, but night itself I like.
this week I’ve seen deer, LOTS of rabbits, some cats… I saw a opossum the other morning and I was struck again by how bizarre that creature looks. I can understand why it is nocturnal. If it were around in daylight other animals and humans would hunt it down and kill it just because it looks so hideously ugly in that ‘omg that thing is an abomination it must be some creature of evil’ way that us humans always respond to things that are radically different from us. Saw a fox this morning, odd little creatures not much bigger than a cat - they don’t have that canine look - they look more catlike and have a cat’s look of intelligence/awareness - noticeable even during the time it takes to run across the road and glance at me as I drive past in the almost-dark.

music music music
Sometimes it’s odd being one of only handful of people in a crowded club of a few hundred patrons over the age of 40, but hey, good music is good music and the Rilo Kiley, Nic Freitas, Thao Nguyen & The Get Down Stay Down show was reason enough to brave the dissaproving glances of da youts.
1st up was Nic Freitas, pleasant enough - not annoying, but nothing really jumped out and grabbed me. Nothing stuck in my head or made me want to go out and check out his music. Tougher for him being a solo act, having the rhythm section of Rilo Kiley accompany him for a few songs helped the arrangements, but still ok not much more.
2nd act was “Thao Nguyen & The Get Down Stay Down”, a group I instantly liked (ok, so I have a soft spot for hot high energy chicks who can sing, write catchy songs AND play a mean guitar, so shoot me), but they’re a group I didn’t realize I had heard before till the 3rd to last song of their set (Bag of Hammers) - I recognized the opening chords immediately - she’s one of those performers that pops up on last.fm periodically who I like but forget to bookmark. I’ll definitely be checking her/their music out. Musically think early Rilo-Kiley mixed with Cat Power but playing guitar and singing with the energy of Karen O (If Karen O played guitar). She really plays a mean guitar. [Some tunes]
Last was Rilo Kiley. Musically as strong as ever, and I had the universal long-time fan mild-complaint “I wish they played more of their older material”. they played enough to make the concert enjoyable, but I don’t like the new album much. It’s catchy and musically proficient, just not very interesting or as distinctive musically as their older stuff. Presentation wise I thought Jenny seemed a lot faker or more polished/less spontaneous. She did more singing without an instrument which left her with nothing to do with her hands so she resorted to cliched lead singer crowd interactions (exaggerated arm waving to get the audience to participate, stuff like that). The 5th member of the band (they always seem to have an extra person when they tour) was adequate but was really only noticeable when she was playing trumpet. (she also sang, played guitar and some keyboards)
Some pictures from the show (not taken by me).
