Random thoughts

I think the increasing rate of obesity in the US is a good thing, it will help me stay behind the curve and be in the thinner minority of Americans.

Everyone seems to think Cable is a great thing for television, well I think it’s old fashioned - I mean I used to have cable - a “land line” as they call them in the phone world, but then I went wireless, now I use an antenae. There aren’t as many content providers available via antenae yet, but once the content providers see the benefits and reduced costs of going wireless I am sure they will be jumping on the bandwagon.

Practical Joke

I heard a story on NPR this afternoon about training wasps (lower case w) to detect bombs, drugs, or human bodies and had a great idea. How about as a practical joke, train some wasps to detect human flatulence? Then when you are in a situation when someone releases gas in public you could release your WASPs and they would swarm to the person who is responsible for the indiscretion.

Misleading Ad Copy

This ad for a collection of “Sci-Fi” fonts popped into my email this morning.

“Sci-Fi

These fonts are great to use if you enjoy individual and group role-playing and fantasy games. Whether your life reflects an epic story line or a medieval battle, these highly legible fonts provide a gothic touch that will set you apart from everyone else!”

Being a lapsed font geek I was curious how the sci-fi related to group-roleplaying and fantasy games. Technically sci-fi can be called fantasy, but in the gaming worlds it usually means quasi medieval with some magical elements/creatures thrown in. The “role-playing” and claim that these fonts ad a “gothic touch” reinforced my confusion, call me a rigid traditionalist but I don’t often think of “Gothic” and “Sci-Fi” together - if the concepts went together then the Borg would be the perfect sci-fi goth, wouldn’t they?

Judge for yourself whether these fonts are great for group-role-playing and fantasy games, help reflect medieval battles, and provide that “gothic touch” you’ve been missing in your life.
