Land of the Dead
***spoiler alert***
My expectations for a Zombie movie aren’t very high to begin with (even if it is by George Romero) so take this with a grain of salt, but I liked the film, it was definitely better than the most recent one in this series (Day of the Dead) Wow, I seem to be saying that a lot lately about films. It wasn’t very large in scale which suprised me because I kind of expected it to be given the title. I was expecting a planet with little human life at all, but I didn’t see much if any difference between the world of this movie and that of “Day of the Dead”. I think perhaps this movie should have been called “Afternoon of the Dead” so the next one could be called “Dusk of the Dead”, etc.
There’s so many inconsistencies that it’s hard to catalog them all, but even though I suspend belief while watching they pop into my head afterwards. Here are a few:
I am ok with the basic premise that zombies aren’t alive so don’t breathe which means they can walk underwater but if they aren’t breathing…
1) why would they yell? (where’s the air coming from to force through their vocal cords) [mike pointed this out]
Also, since Zombies are dead and there’s no metabolism going on - just some brain to muscle communication going on,
2) How could a zombie whose head was all but severed flip it’s head up (without using hands) and bite someone?
3) Why would a zombie “mercy kill” another zombie in flames if they don’t feel any pain?
4) Why would zombies even need to eat human flesh to survive if there is no metabolism going on in their bodies?
5) Why wouldn’t the zombies start dying off after they had eaten all the available live humans?
And a couple of general issues:
6) Why wouldn’t zombies who are supposed to retain some remnants of their memories and who are apparently attracted to bright lights(fireworks) have noticed the large city with it’s well lit skyscraper within sight of their small town.
7) How was the city powering it’s generators for lights and elevators?
8) In a post apocolyptic world where there is no more government why would the only thing the city ruler chooses to bring with him as he flees the city be 2 satchels of paper money?
9) Why would a supposedly intelligent person spend the time to think about and write about a dumb zombie movie?

Adult Conversations
One of the best parts of having one’s kids grow up, is that at some point when they reach adulthood you can have deep IM conversations with them about romantic comedies and Jennifer Garner.

popular among friends of children
C1 and friends sometimes play a game when bored where they come up with a question and everyone has to answer it honestly. Recently the question was something like “If you had to pick what order your friend’s family members died in, what would it be?” C1 said his friends apparently like me because with all of them I was last or one of the last to go. I think it’s more that I interact with them less so I am more of a blank slate, but still it made me laugh - a very funny measure of likeability.
