I was happy…
when getting up to leave the movie theatre, J remembered that she left her plastic cup at her seat and didn’t object to going back and getting it and disposing of it properly.

Myth World Cup
A group of friends and I have been participating in the Myth World Cup 2004 (Myth is a very fun real time strategy computer game where you do battle and compete against other people or teams in real time).
We never play Myth competitively (except against each other) so we aren’t much competition for the people who play to win above all, so we haven’t won any games yet (except 3 we won when the other team didn’t show up) but the organizing and communication and practices and strategy sessions and even the matches themselves have been a lot of fun.
Running into random players on the game servers while practicing has reinforced just how lucky I was to find the people I play with. Nice people I would be happy to hang out with in real life.

[update 7/11/04: We got our first game win right after I wrote the note above, and last night we won every game in our match - that's 5 games - and we even replayed twoadditional games due to technical problems - which we also won! Very fun]

Songs and connotations
What songs have emotional place time connotations for you?
For me, it’s not a song but one side of an album, the kind of album that was made of vinyl and had sides and if you left the arm up on your stereo the same side would play over and over and over again. Although the album wasn’t ever a favorite of mine, any song from the 2nd side of Heart’s “Dog and Butterfly” will always bring back memories of a marathon make-out session with my partner in my first really physical relationship in my dorm where neither of us could be bothered to get out of bed and walk the 3 feet to the stereo to change the album or turn it off.
“Girl U Want” by Devo and “The Waiting” have strong person place time connotations (an ex, Harvard Square, fall afternoon).
REM and Radiohead have similarly strong connotations due to an ex’s incessant playing of both bands. Although I liked both bands (and still do) it is hard to hear either band without at least thinking of that ex. Good music but the music brings back memories of just really horrible times and arguments and stress and depression. It doesn’t seem right that such good music should be the soundtrack I remember accompanying such horrible parts of my life - I think I need to get a better soundtrack coordinator for my life.
“Nick Drake Tape” by Clem Snide is driving south on rte 95 in Massachusetts alone on a winter night.
Wesley Willis is driving south on rte 95 in Massachusetts alone on a cool fall night with the sunroof open laughing at the unexpected beauty of the world.
Jonathan Richman is sitting/swinging on a swingset on a playground with your best friend and talking and eating ice cream cones on a summer evening.
