Vanilla Sky
Very rich visually, sonically. What a marvellously well done film. Perhaps seeing the movie it is a remake of/based on will dilute my appreciation for it’s novel form and feel. Perhaps will do the same for my appreciation of Penelope Cruz, but in this film she sparkled. Regardless of how un/original the idea of the film is, the execution is just really powerful. Great use of music to propel, underscore and illuminate the feelings and actions of the film. Last film I recall doing this well (if somewhat less even) was A Life Less Ordinary - a very uneven film, but certain moments were near perfect in the blend of visual and auditory - like a 4 dimensional punch to the jaw. Vanilla Sky wasn’t quite the same in terms of moments of power, but the music added so much to the film it was like the music gave the director an extra set of colors or an additional entirely new palette to paint his ideas onto the film with.

“Journalistic Integrity” increasingly rare
The news division of the American television network CBS scored a major coup when it interviewed the reclusive-when-not-selling-something Michael Jackson about recent criminal charges against him.
The sleazy side of how the interview was obtained? Seems that CBS’s entertainment division had been planning a network special about Michael that was scheduled to air in November but which was put on hold when the criminal charges were made against Jackson. CBS has rescheduled the special in an apparent trade for the interview. CBS entertainment spokesman Chris Ender said that the entertainment special would not have been rescheduled if Jackson hadn’t addressed the molestation charges with the network’s news division. Note that the stipulation wasn’t that Jackson address the charges in some public interview, but that the charges be addressed with _CBS’s network news division_. A direct trade.
Sleep tight Walter Cronkite. Sleep tight America.
