In the category of “things I don’t expect to happen in a society that has extensive safety laws, city fire marshalls, building safety inspections, and that requires permits for any flammable activities” is this night club fire that killed 96 people. I really don’t expect it when it happens a few miles down the road.

The death of a tradition? Maybe no more US soldiers will be sent home in wooden boxes if chemical or biological weapons are involved in battles the soldiers die in. Current thinking appears to be that cremating the bodies would be a better option. Interesting questions regarding whether the ashes will be returned to families (ala individual crematorium burnings) or whether that will even be possible (mass burnings will make identification impossible), and what about religious objections to cremation? Rest easy knowing the US military will make the right decisions.
