Presidents have often encouraged physical fitness - even when I was in elementary school there was a presidential physical fitness program, so I don’t find it odd or self-serving in any way that President Bush is urging Americans to get into better shape and be more physically active. What I do find disturbing (at least partly because it reinforces all my stereotypes of what motivates people like bush and I don’t like to have stereotypes) is the comments by the White House about the potential benefits of the program. Granted they were probably taken out of context by some anti-bush liberal media elite person to slant the story, but what they said was “this lifestyle commitment alone[30 minutes of exercise a day] would ultimately save the government and private insurers billions of dollars in health care costs.” story]

I have spent too many late nights lately watching bad TV when I am too tired to do anything else and there is nothing else that my mind can do but spin in destructive little circles if left unattended. TV is a drug.
Speaking of television, I want to laugh like people on TV do. When things go bad I want to be able to appreciate the humor of the situation. I feel like my attempts at humor often go unappreciated. I am reminded of the Jonathan Richman song that says “I got a fine sense of humor, but she doesn’t laugh at my jokes”. Maybe I just need a larger or different audience. A lot of times on television shows the other characters don’t really appreciate a character’s humor - it’s the audience who finds it funny. Maybe that’s my problem, I need to either find an audience to play to or stop playing to an audience that isn’t there. I often think I am funny, but I am probably a little biased.

Oh my god, but this thing is creepy. I don’t know why a six-legged walking tree harvesting machine strikes me as so unsettling. Probably just too much insectoid sci-fi in my past (Alien, Starship Troopers, Species, Tremors, Men in Black, Predator, too many Xfiles shows to recount) . [Courtesy boingboing.net]

The Guardian (the British newspaper) has a scary story on the dark side of the Texas Oil power structure and the Bush family’s political dynasty.
