A few new (or at least newly discovered) online music tools

LOUD speakershuffler.fm : kind of like Pandora for music blogs. Pick a style of music and it plays songs from the first blog it finds that has an MP3 in that style. Since it actuallly opens up the webpage hosting the song file, it’s a great way to discover new music blogs.  Navbar lets you ‘facebook like’ a song, or tweet about it.

song.ly : search engine for mp3 files. Put in a song title and it displays a list of songs it thinks match your search.   Each song has links to play the song, buy the song, or tweet that you are listening to the song.

gorankem.com : community based ranking of musicians. Not comparing one musician to another, but rating various songs by the same artist.  Might be useful for sampling an unfamilar artist, because rather than just list an artist’s most popular songs (’popular’ being most purchases ala iTunes) it lists the songs that fans think are the best.

sadsteve.com : Interesting music search/distribution site, artists can create their own profile pages and sell their products - all money going to the bands. But it searches the entire internet for music - not just artists on the site.  Sarch on a song and ithen in the serach results click on the ‘Play’ button.  Up pops an MP3 player window that lets you play, download the song, email the link to a friend or share the song on Facebook.

Also:  a free desktop app for Mac users: PandoraJam: Puts the Pandora player on your desktop as a standalone app - no more taking up a browser just to play music from pandora.  (Mac only, but there’s been a Pandora sidebar widgety thing for Windows for ages.)

curmudgeon

i think i know the point when you’ve crossed over into curmudgeon and gone from contemporary cool to outdated relic.

when you try out a new computer application and instead of saying ‘I wonder how this works?’ you go ‘why the f*** doesn’t it work like x?’

when a new technology comes out and instead of saying ‘wow, that’s cool i’d like one of those’ you say ‘what on earth would i ever use that for?’

i meet these people all the time. my age or younger. one of my college roommates was like this in his 20’s. i am becoming one of those people.

more categories, same data

since i’ve been clearing the shelves of local thrift stores of movies on VHS (4 or 5/$1) and have accumulated a stockpile of a couple hundred or more movies i haven’t actually been _watching_ many movies at all. wonder if that’s why i stopped reading?

anyways, so no new netflix rentals in a couple of months yet i still get new categories of movies to choose from that their complex movie picking robot brain thinks i will like. here are the most recent.

Quirky Dysfunctional-Family Movies

Comedy

Violent Fight-the-System Movies from the 1980s

Campy Demon Supernatural Horror Movies

Con-Game Movies

New name for this blog.

Ok. I haven’t done the graphics logo editing or page redesign yet, but I wanted to make this announcement before someone else scarfs up the best site name ever.

So…. with no further ado, I hereby christen this site/blog “Cthulu’s Underpants”.
